Progression - without it...whats the point ?
« on: May 04, 2008, 08:04:08 AM »

This was my first solid dance clip. It was actually about 3 - 5 months after I started dancing. And when I say that I really mean it, I never danced at all growing up, I didn't have the motivation let alone the confidence.
But liquid changed all that and really took over my entire thought process at this stage. So much that usually I would spend around half of my day on dancing through; practicing, thinking about dance, watching dance clips, talking about dancing with friends and mentors and even doing  finger exercises and digitz in school/car rides/train rides. I had a group of friends I practiced with,( we later formed a group called DMC deceptive movements crew) and we all started at roughly the same level as far as liquid goes, and stayed neck and neck for a long time. It was a good motivator to always want to have something new to show your boys next time you got down together. Also had some skilled local dancers in Thom and my boy Dr. Talvatron to help me out.
Chronologically it was around march or April of... I'm pretty sure 2002, but It could have been 2001, I don't remember what year the LPC video dropped) but if i remember right, I had seen the lpc video once or twice by now. But more importantly, I had seen them first hand at club motion in philly(which was a big deal for me at the time!) and got some good advice, positive feedback, and plenty of ideas and inspiration to fuel the fire. The styles I had an interest in and worked on at the time were : liquid, digitz, tutting waving, poppin and bottin  - And at the time, that was basically the order as far as time spent practicing each style. Liquid being first of course. I went by DMC Theta Rhythm back then.

Before this next clip came out, I had attended a DEMF. That year I chilled with 7th flow, senchi, mkg, and frequency most of the weekend. I had my fire back after demf, I was real motivated. I practiced pretty heavy and really made big strides, and was close to my dream of having a dance studio to teach private lessons or classes from. I was actually aiming to go non-profit with it as well knowing it would not bring in much money. But my gung-ho devotion to my goal and to the dance was fading for some reason. I had gotten into making beats by this time, also was picking up rappin and free stylin, as well as beat boxin, and even tried my hand at spinnin Records, scratching mostly. Through having these other outlets and then working a full time job I ended up dancing less and less, also, visiting the forums and going to parties/events less frequently.
This clip came out in 2005, I think. but I had been slackin for about 4-6 months as far as practicing goes. Hadn't even been checkin the forums, didn't have internet. But we wanted to let people know "hey, were still here, just a little busy right now."

Now, since the "return of the liquid" clip I never really got back into practicing again, I would only dance once in a while. A few times a month at best. I had moved out of philly and back to jersey. I started checking the forums again, started talking to everyone again, got my motivation back by watching all the new youtube clips I had missed while I was away. A few weeks of practice and this next clip is where I was at. It was filmed in November or December of 2006 when Itch and Kai came for a visit.

After this clip I practiced real hard, I started talking to fu and then going up NYC here and there, and spending weekends. I learned a lot from him and got to get down with shockwave and D-strange a few times to. Mostly we attended poppin events so I improved in that department. And thats when poppin, bottin, boogaloo, and these other styles really started finding their way into my liquid.

Demf, may of 07. I had been really tryin to improve and explore new things in preparation for demf, but I still hadn't even learned the old stuff I'd forgotten from being absent for long. So, I feel like I lost touch with certain philosophies, techniques, and ideas that I was really trying to push before I fell off the map. But I kept at it and knew that eventually I'd be comfortable and confident with my dance again.
And by the time demf rolled around I was starting to feel good about where my dancing was at.

This was actually a completely random 2 man freestyle with and kai. When I edited this clip from the demf footage I didn't think kai wanted me releasing footage of him from demf so I edit most of his solo parts out. This was a great vibe though in this moment, there was a semi circle of people, I'd say between 50-100, and about half of them were watching this little performance here:

We later tried to re create that moment and if you watch the "Demf night" Clip then you 'll see the other two man freestyle in its entirety .

EDIT :   Heres that second freestyle me and kai did.

Not to long after demf, This clip was filmed the day after a party. I was pretty beat, and didn't have to much energy. But I threw down and was happy with the footage.

I was trying to focus on digitz that incorporate the entire body or at least cover a lot of area with them . But it was new ground for me, that I still haven't explored enough.

A few months later, borrowed my boys web cam, and filmed this:

Was getting into digitz more but not being disciplined enough with my practice habits and it shows in this  clip, cool ideas that could have been really great if I perfected them.

Once I saw how awesome having a web cam around was, I made it a point to get one. I picked up a pretty good one but USB webcams use CPU power. And My computer was pretty weak at this point. So I couldn't record in a decent resolution. But, even though the quality of this clip is pretty bad, I'm really pleased with where my dancing was at this point. I had just come off a very good summer as far as training and dance progression goes. I was in pretty good shape, my balance and flexibility was improving, and was starting to blend styles in a way I had not ever tapped into before. This was one of my favorite sessions from jersey I ever had, I was really wrapped up in my illusions and having a good time in this footage and it shows.

I released some other practice clips after that last one but None of them really were anything to special to me. So we are going to skip ahead roughly 6 months ahead to Late winter of 2008.  I had been slacking a little as far as solid practice sessions but still had dancing on the brain and was still throwin down a session about once a week. Kai had come to visit the east coast again for a breakcore party in philly (warehouse style). So here were some snippets of that evening :

When I was chopping this clip up and looking at my dancing, it really dawned on  me how much my style had changed in the past year. My dancing had been taking a new direction every few months and my liquid specifically was looking a bit awkward to me. I knew that the things I was doing were fun to do, and I guess fun to watch, but I felt like I was loosing my direction, getting off track from where I really wanted to be with liquid.

I was going to say the same thing, Tommy. People round here tell me I am progressing quickly, but I am about 5 months in and my stuff isn't anywhere near this level of control. I can clearly see the Fu influence in the clip, and I feel like I need to session with someone like that so I can pick their brain about some things I have been trying to lock down.

Regardless, sick stuff. Super inspirational...
