Headphones and whatnot
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:27:46 PM »

So today i picked up a new pair of headphones http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=004974 ( no i didn't pay anywhere near that listed MSRP for them considering BBY has them at 100 and my employee is 63 i got em pretty cheap. and yes i checked double and triple checked they are the same ones. ) I wanted something sealed not ported and something super aural (encompass the ear completely). so luckily i was recommended these.

First impressions.. AMAZING. even for 100 they are by far one of the best values in headphones I've been able to find. The bass response is amazing w/ a response down to 8hz its not overly aggressive but fills out music and even movies VERY nicely. Not to relaxed on the high end and the 25khz response provides more than audible representation of the high frequencies. While a little tight at first they are still by far more comfortable than on ear headphones. Great buy if your looking for something a that sounds amazing and your not afraid of a little bulkiness

What headphones do you use??

What are you using??? what do you want?? whats your opinion on the perfect pair of headphones?

Good pick. That's probably what I'd get if I wanted sealed headphones. :)

I use open-back Grado SR60s with doughnut (as opposed to the stock bowl) earpads. They are a delight, but lately the left channel has been cutting out. I'm pretty sure that the short is in the middle of the line or so. I want to get these fixed but don't know if I care to pay for a fix, when I bought them for ~$70.

If I get another pair of headphones, I'll probably get the same. I listen mostly to rock-type music, so Grado fits my needs perfectly. I really don't ever plan on getting high-end headphones, because I can't be bothered to deal with headphone amps.

Yeah I hear grado's are amazing for rock music. I have the JVC harx700 headphones, best 40 dollars I've spent. Really exceptional sound for the price.

I think I am going to buy a new pair of phones next week. After the glowing review Richard just gave, I may just give those a shot.

gotta get a pair of closed-back soon for the dj'ing stuff.  also need a portable amp for my AKG702's, as the little iphone simply cant provide them enough power.

just got a pair of sony mdr-v700's for dj'ing.  the bass response is nice, good loudness with no amplification.  dubstep and glitch-hop sound BANGIN on em.  would never recommend for idm/postrock though.  the layers start to blur at higher volumes (without amplification).  they'll do just fine for dj'ing, but now that my ears have enjoyed open-back design, im never going back for regular listening.

Resurrecting this thread, as I need some advice on headphones for Christmas. Thinking about the Sennheiser 595's (or converting some 555's). Problem is I'll probably have them in public and the open design may be just a bit rude. (Also the Senn's require a 1/4 to 1/8 Grado adapter for non-stereo use.) Also thinking about Bose AE2 (for blocking sound, even though they aren't officially noise reduction). Both are in the $150 range, which is the upper limit of what I'm looking to spend. Any advice for coffee shop with iPhone/laptop over the ear headphones with great sound quality and ideally some reduction in ambient noise?

Also, what do you guys recommend for affordable portable amps?

please no bose :(

from http://gilmore2.chem.northwestern.edu/ubb/showpage.php?fnum=1&tid=7601:

Q3: What good sealed phones are there (in price order)?

Koss SportaPro $29.95 value:3.5 Impedance 60ohm. Actually listed as an open phone, but in reallity leaks little sound.
Made with athletics in mind. Stays on druing most physical activities and can handle sweating ok.
Bass is a bit murky and blurred.
BeyerDynamics DT231 $59 value:5 A great sealed phone in its pricerange.
Sennheiser HD280 Pro $99 value:5 A really good headphone if you look for a sealed phone.
BeyerDynamics DT250-80 $179 value:4 Impedance 80ohm. Good sound.
Ultrasone HFI-550 $189 value:4 DJ-type phone can survive a bit of rought handling and one-ear listening.
For HiFi this might not be the ideal choise.
AKG K271S $199 value:4 Impedance 55ohm. A very good sealed phone for its pricerange.

i personally have akg k 26 p, but the model number has since changed to something i don't know. i think senn hd280 and akg are the best value for your price range

here's a good resource

Some great suggestions, Joon, TY! For the Senn's, CNET was more impressed with the 555's for iPhone than the 280s, which was why I was looking at that model more, but you're right in that they are probably better if I want to avoid sound leakage. Never had been impressed with Bose for speakers, so I'll cross their headphones off the list too. I'll have to check out the AKGs, too.

Any other thoughts anyone?
