"Seeing" Music
« on: January 05, 2011, 06:10:28 PM »

So, I see music.  I've asked a few people around me and some people see music and some don't.

Like, I see shapes, vectors.  I see notes hitting surfaces, and phrases as lines bouncing around in space.

I guess I assumed that all dancers saw music, but one of my good dancer friends totally laughed at me when I brought it up.  "Like literally see music?"  Like I was crazy.

No, not literally.  I'm aware that what I'm seeing isn't in front of me.  It's more like when you try to imagine someone jumping up and down - or when some people read books - they can see the world that they're reading about.

In any case, I wanna know if you guys see music and if so, what do you see?

yes, mostly what you see.

however genres like dubstep/glitchhop/idm have more textured and unique sounds(compared to a drum machine emulation)  that make me imagine objects(or entire scenes) more based in reality and more complex in general. depends on the track.

Yeah, my understanding is that the clinical definition of synesthesia is something that's repeatable - like the number five is always the exact same shape.  When given the same random long sequence of numbers, synesthesthetes will always respond with the same results.

The same isn't really true for me with seeing music.  Listen to the same song twice and depending on my mood or whatever I'm practicing or whatever, I get a different response.

But interesting that you bring up the wiki article nonetheless.  There's some cool stuff linked from there about "multisensoral integration":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multisensory_integration

too long for me to read all of it tonight, but cool stuff nonetheless
