I don't think there is any escaping the idea that this is a big expensive meet-up.  However, I do think that this could potentially serve a greater purpose than simply memories.  Here are some of my ideas:

1.  A party hosted by Tom with a nationally/internationally acclaimed headliner.  The idea here is to thrust people into the environment where our dance has thrived  since it's inception.  I really like the idea of putting us center stage at an event and associating our name with said event.  It's good press.  It makes people who travel all the way there to attend feel a little important.  It forces people to get down in public from the get go.  Also, this is a fund raiser.  If we did this right, we might make a little money which would give us a head start on next year.  This is super important because none of this shit is going to be free.  Period.  Also, for me, keeping next year in mind is important because if you do this right it's like building a brand.  The first year is critical and the next year it grows.  That same thing happened with demf.

2.  BBQ.  After having put people in an awkward social situation the first day.  I really like the idea of tearing down any walls or insecurities between people by having a really a relaxed social setting which people are doing something collectively.  This is a time for people to really meet and greet.  It's a time to do introductions of everyone.  To talk about why we're here.  It's a time to lay things out and make people feel comfortable.

3.  Classes.  Now, that we've gotten the introductions out of the way.  It's time to hit a studio and have classes.  Depending on the number of people, we might rotate groups of people.  Ideally, we would have everyone in the same room.  A sense of group and brotherhood is important.  We really beat in that community idea and making everyone feel included is incredibly important.  I think classes should include history lessons and dance lessons.  I think this is a super fun area that should last roughly 6 to 8 hours.

4.  Private party.  I think after a day like this people will be tired as hell, and a cool thing would be to have a private party with some locals djing.  We all just listen to some jams, have a beer or whatever, and talk shop or get down.  This gives people the opportunity to ask questions. directly to people about the things they've learned during the course of the day.  It also gives people a friendly environment to cypher or battle.

5.  Street Performing.  The last day to me would be about how to take your dance and put it in the world outside of a club.  How to spread culture through an active approach using yourself dancing, talking, flyers or whatever.  A last set of classes if necessary.  A closing ceremony and I think people should get media packets.  I think the packet should include business cards for the website and a t-shirt at the very least.

I really want to hit home that for me an event like this is as much about bonding as it is about dance.  Events like this catered specifically to a group of people that share a passion can be some of the coolest and most memorable and moving experiences in a persons life.

Below are some thoughts about the logistics of what I said above:

The event will need a fundraiser before hand with a target goal of 3 to 7 grand.  Honestly, I think it would be cool to see about renting a house out in the burbs near or on the great lake up there.  I don't think a hotel is a good enviornment.  In fact, I would put the bbq either at the house where hopefully everyone could stay or try to rent out a park space so people can be in a relaxed outdoor enviornment (summer time ftw).  will definitely need to rent studio space and find out the street performing laws as people don't need to get tickets or arrested on their vacation.

In the end, I think that being as fiscally responsible as possible the first year is critical because it's the second or third year that will be even bigger if it's done right.

Also this will be a sausage-fest methinks. Except for girlfriends and wives who get drug into it. Having a bunch of pretty girls running around adds a palpable energy to an event. Hire go-go dancers or girls from hooters haha. Or better yet get regular girls who don't suck to come. Sausagefest = suck. That's the number one rule to any party.

win, hire strippers

Also, travel is going to be the most expensive part of this trip.  I would suggest a map where people who are SERIOUSLY considering going could place pins to help us figure out where they live and how we can reduce the cost of this for everyone.  For example, one person could be driving on or near a route that passes other people.  Sharing gas could ultimately lead to fairly inexpensive travel expenditures.  If planned well in advance, then that person might even get an oil change before hand and then divide the cost among his passengers and it would still be 100 dollars cheaper than a plane ticket.

MrKingGeorge... some good ideas. I was talking to Tom last night and we talked about shirts. I need to speak to some other people before hand but I might be able to help in that aspect. All proceeds would go towards the event. Idea is still new and needs to be discussed

i mean really this community is centered around going out at night and dancing and mostly trying to get other people to go out at night and dance. history is more or less trivia, albeit interesting trivia. concepts can be shared through clips, so what can this liquid conference bring that isn't just a glorified version of going out at night and dancing? what can this event do to take advantage of the potentially numerous liquid practitioners in one place that will be different from demf or cave raves, that cannot be effectively replicated on the internet?

larger than average meetups are few and far between, make them count more than DEMFs of yore. because really, DEMF brought nothing to the table but good memories and some footage. how do you say 'we were here and this happened and it mattered' in a substantial effective way?

i'd want to see guerrilla street performances. not your typical cardboard and boombox, but something raw and original but not artsy fartsy. something with a little bit of fuck you. a contest, classes of course, maybe even a porno shoot. maybe it would be worthwhile to look into what other festivals and conventions offer

edit: haha wow that wwas a rant

Great rant sir...here here...but your just giving me static.  Some ideas would be nice, I have all those questions swirling around in my head.  Now how to make it realistic, how to make it genuine, and how to make it something that might shut your sour yap is all up to you ;)

If someone is going to teach something with any depth than that is going to take a lot of preparation on that person's behalf. Or else you're going to get some jv squad thing where a dude stands up in front of everyone mumbles out a random concept and is done in 5 minutes. And nobody learns anything. You need charismatic personalities delivering information.

Let it be a sausage fest...there will be after hours, various other functions in the hotel, raves, clubs, or whatever once were done doing what we came to do.

yeah save the wackness for other threads...

MKG there were some new ideas there, i liked a couple of them and as I continue to price things out, i'm more then likely going to be adapting some of yours.

Keep em coming and start stashing singles before you go to the strip club so you can afford to hit the strip clubs while your visiting the windy city next year...a dollar here a dollar there who knows you might be able to buy your way here and pay for someone else to come up with new, dare I say better excuses.

What is it you're trying to do?

I thought it was an event. Is it just classes then go fend for yourself in the city?

Is it just a bunch of dudes sitting around in a hotel conference room who are talking... lol that happens on the net. B/c like Joon was saying how is this different than any other meetup except there's nothing to go do? Is secret dance info getting passed out? I'm pretty sure that info is called practice lol.

If you're having dj's come in what are they coming in for? For like twenty dudes standing around in a circle inside a ballroom watching each other dance and argue about dancing while girlfriends and wives stand on the sidelines impatiently tapping their feet.

For some reason I picture this going down.

I have no problem going to this at the hotel down the street from me.

And I know you're going to start whining "you're not going to come" this is for us real dancers. Well what about everybody who's got to travel. What's the point of going to a glorified chicago meetup when all that's going to happen is a 30 minute meeting then go fend for yourself in a city where you don't know anyone.

MKG has good rational points. You're sausage fest go wander in the city point is not rational.

+ fucking 1

this isnt a party, the focus is on liquid/digitz and liquid/digitz dancers. thats why its different from demf or any other meetup at  festival. how are people oblivious to such a simple idea as that.

the details of how this will be focused on liquid is inconsequential as pwtom was simply throwing out the basis and nothing has been finalized yet, only that one single goal.
