Because most organized religions are patriarchal, the men have the control and make the rules. Calling God an "It" would be disrespectful and it makes it easier to accept that God judges you if "He" is portrayed as a male superior. Remember the Adam/Eve creation story is just 1 story (although prob the most widely believed considering it's the basis of Judeo-Christian religions). Personally I believe it's a metaphor put into an easily digested story.

And thanks Kai/Roxy, I wasn't familiar with the term. Now I can easily label myself instead of launching into a lecture when someone asks about my beliefs  ;D

I've read a few books recently by the author Ramtha, most notably 'The White Book'. I 'coincidentally' stumbled upon his stuff then read the books with an open mind, and I was quite amazed. He has answered every question I've had about life, where religion & science fail to meet common ground. He delves deeply into truth, philosophy, time and even brain chemistry & quantum physics. I recommend it to anyone interested in alternative philosophies.

His 4 basic teachings:
Consciousness & energy create the nature of reality
You are God
Make known the unknown
Conquer thyself

I think God takes other forms outside of nature based on our consciousness, needs, and desires. I think in a society where women are oppressed or the people simply want a comforting matriarchal figure, God takes the form of a woman. In an area where masculinity is valued or is a stable part of survival such as in a lot of desert tribes, God appears as a woman. Or in a society where there is a constant battle of the sexes, God appears as a androgynous hermaphrodite, such is the case of Ardhanari in which Shiva(male) and Shakti(female) are portrayed put together where one half of the body is male and the other female. To me, the phrase "in his own image" in the Bible is meant to be pantheist. Everything is made in God/Allah's own image. I also feel that's God's bodily form can be determined by all of us willingly, not just simply subconsciously. In other words, you can create your own image and form of the Biblical God with your mind and start your own religion without having to forsake the previous given to us by Moses, Jesus, and Mohammed. Call God whatever you want to call him/her/it and have God appear to you in the form you want him to, without having to worship any other god because your god is the same god that was called Amen Ra, Allah, Jehovah, Elohim, Yahweh, Shiva, Krishna, The Heavenly Father, etc. I also think that God is part of that eternal Karmic(spiritual moral) cycle. In my view of gods and the spiritual universe, there is a set of cosmic morals in which all reality, spiritual and physical, is built on. Things like it's wrong to cheat, lie, steal, and commit adultery are moral standards that even God follows, He did not create them, he follows them just as we do. But I feel that God is a part of this Karma himself as well, one of these cosmic morals is that there must be a higher spiritual meaning of life that can be experienced, so since it is a karmic law that the essence of the soul and that spiritual universe must exist, the spirit is eternal with no beginning or end, it just is. I think the same goes for God. God is eternal because the existence of a compassionate creator and judge is a karmic law.
