The Straight Line Grid (or Square/Cube Grid) is a basic and perhaps most fundamental grid system in Liquid. If you look at dancers like FuManChu, Frequency, Houdoken and TMY, much of their movement is aesthetically pleasing because it’s logically bound to this grid. Additionally, the Tutting community has been using this system as well for years to define the spatial constructs of their dance. People like Icon, ShiftedShapes and Future have all used it to enhance their awareness of 90 degree possibilities.
In this video, I’ll break down the basic hips-up straight line grid with examples of motion that tie into it as well as apply grid overlays to assist in visual learning. Note that this video does not demonstrate the full grid, but only part of the Wall Plane section of it. The rest will come in future videos and tie back together with this one, but for now it’s something to ponder and practice with.
